The Salvation of Innocence
2024
Acrylic and charcoal on thick edge gallery canvas
121.9 x 152.4 x 3.5cm
This life-size painting is rich in its subjectivity to discuss themes relating to mortality. In renaissance art, Skeltons were traditionally used to represent the fragility of life. Here, a young rabbit is stopped in her path by a skeleton who leans down - holding his finger up in a ‘shh’ manner, seeming all too alive. A Cherry Blossom tree blooms over the figures heads. But already, the flower petals begin to fall among the figures’ feet. The situation is surreal, dream-like. The cartoonesce, childlike depiction of the rabbit is juxtaposed by the ghostly skeleton. But, their peaceful meeting also presents an opportunity to reconcile with macabre thoughts.
